Directions:

From Payson, take Hwy. 87 (toward Phoenix) 16 miles to Hwy 188.  Go South 15 miles to Tonto Basin.  Roosevelt Lake is an additional 3miles South.

 

Tonto Basin is located only about 3 miles from Roosevelt Lake on Hwy 188 between Globe and Hwy 87....about 80 miles north of the Phoenix area.  National Forests surround the town on all four sides.  The historic Fort Reno is in the area and many ancient indian ruins dot the countryside. 

 

 Tonto Creek

Tonto Creek runs through the town and floods the banks every spring as it roars down to Roosevelt Lake. 

 

Marine Corp Museum

 

A great place for friendly folks to retire and fish all day, every day.

The community is very civic minded.  There is a very large Marine Corp League with a museum worthy of a town of any size and a very active VFW. 

 

Tonto Basin Outdoors

 

If you want to run to the wide open spaces, this is the place.  Real estate is still reasonable and the panoramic views are to die for.  Visit the Butcher Hook for a sandwich and go by the historic Punkin Center Bar before you leave town.  If you bring your quads, you can unload them there and park your vehicle nearby...then ride across Tonto creek into the great outdoors.
